Glacial Wading Layering Guide
How to Prevent Wader Freeze in Glacial Flows
The Kenai River is fed by glacial meltwater from Kenai Lake and Skilak Lake, maintaining temperatures between 38°F and 46°F even in mid-summer. Standard waders alone will not keep you warm during an 8-hour day.
1. The Three-Layer Rule
Never wear cotton under waders. Start with a moisture-wicking synthetic base layer, add a high-loft fleece middle layer for thermal insulation, and top with breathable stockingfoot waders. Neoprene is rarely necessary if you layer correctly.
2. Double-Sock Protocol
Wear a thin liner sock made of merino wool or synthetic blend, followed by a heavy, thick wool wading sock. Crucially, ensure your wading boots are half a size larger than normal to prevent restricting blood circulation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Should I buy bootfoot or stockingfoot waders?
A: Stockingfoot waders paired with separate wading boots offer much better ankle support and comfort, which is essential for wading on round Kenai river rocks.
Q: Can I wear jeans under my waders?
A: No. Jeans retain moisture and offer zero insulation value once they become damp. Opt for fleece pants or synthetic thermal underwear.
