Middle Kenai River: Scenic Float Trips & Trophy Water

The middle Kenai River runs approximately 32 miles from the outlet of Kenai Lake near Cooper Landing (river mile 82) to the inlet of Skilak Lake (river mile 50). This is a designated Wild and Scenic River corridor — no motorized boats allowed — making it exclusively accessible by drift boat or raft. The scenery is breathtaking; the fishing for kings and rainbow trout is world-class.

What Makes the Middle River Special

• No motorized boats: The Wild and Scenic designation means only drift boats, rafts, and canoes are permitted on this section. Quieter and less congested than the lower river.
• King salmon water: The upper canyon section between Jim's Landing and Skilak Lake is one of the most productive king salmon zones in Alaska. Deep water, slower current, and cold clear flow hold fish throughout the run.
• Rainbow trout density: The middle river supports some of the highest densities of wild rainbow trout in the Kenai system. Spring and fall fishing is exceptional with beads and streamer flies.
• Scenery: Kenai Mountains, glacially-carved canyon walls, moose, bears, eagles. This section of river is consistently ranked among the most scenic float trips in North America.
• Sockeye access: Sockeye pass through this section June–August, though the main shore fishery is on the lower river. The Russian River confluence (RM 82.5) is just above the put-in.
• Fly fishing focus: The middle river is the preferred stretch for serious fly anglers targeting rainbow trout. Nymph rigs with egg patterns, beads, and streamers produce year-round.

Access Points & Float Logistics

• Jim's Landing (put-in): Most common drift boat launch near Cooper Landing at approximately RM 75. Access via Jim's Landing Road off the Sterling Hwy.
• Tern Lake / Upper Bridge: Alternative put-in closer to Kenai Lake outlet. Popular for float campers doing multi-day trips into Skilak Lake.
• Skilak Lake take-out: The float ends at the Kenai River outlet of Skilak Lake. Powerboats pick up drift boats here for shuttle. The lake itself is large and can be dangerous in wind — check conditions before crossing.
• Float time: Jim's Landing to Skilak Lake inlet takes 4–7 hours depending on current speed, stops, and fishing time. It's a full-day float when fishing productively.
