The Kenai River has the most monitored salmon fishery in Alaska — ADF&G sonar counters at River Mile 19 record daily passage estimates for every species, and that data tells a clear story about when to be here. Whether you're targeting kings, sockeye, coho, or trophy trout, your trip timing changes everything. Here's the full picture.

2026 Species Calendar — Month by Month

• May (15–31): Early king salmon season opens. Kings begin entering from Cook Inlet — first fish of the year. Low angler pressure, excellent opportunities on early-run kings that can exceed 60 lbs. Rainbow trout active throughout.
• June: Prime early king run — June 1–30 is the peak trophy king window. Sockeye begin entering June 15 (first run). King fishing can be subject to emergency closures if escapement goals are not met — watch ADF&G daily.
• July (1–15): Late-run kings plus first-run sockeye. Sonar counts at RM 13.7 often reach 5,000–20,000 sockeye per day. The highest angler volume of the season. Book well in advance — prime dates sell out in January.
• July (15–31): Peak second-run sockeye. Daily sonar counts can exceed 30,000 fish. Limits achievable for most anglers. Pink salmon (humpies) arrive in even years. The most productive 2-week window of the entire season.
• August: Second sockeye run tapering off, coho salmon (silvers) beginning to arrive August 1. August 15–31 is peak coho entry. Less crowded than July. Excellent rainbow trout fishing as salmon begin dying upstream.
• September: Prime coho (silver) season — aggressive, acrobatic fish that love spinners and flies. September 1–20 is the most consistent silver fishing. Rainbow trout season building toward fall peak. Fewer anglers = better access.
• October: Trophy rainbow trout season peaks. Rainbows gorge on salmon carcasses and eggs — fish over 24 inches come to net regularly. No king, sockeye, or coho. Cold, quiet, spectacular. The "secret season" most visitors don't know about.
• Dolly Varden: Available spring and fall (May–June, September–October). Dolly Varden follow sockeye and rainbow trout through the system — best on beads and small streamers. No quota pressure.

Which Month is Best for You?

• Best for Trophy Kings: June 1–20 — before the late-run king closures typically begin. Early run fish average 40–60 lbs. Subject to emergency order changes.
• Best for Volume Sockeye: July 15–August 5 — second run peak. Sonar counts at their highest. Limit (6 sockeye/day with 12 in possession) achievable for most anglers on guided trips.
• Best for Families: August 15 – September 10 — coho season. Silver salmon are aggressive and fight hard, making them excellent for all skill levels. Less crowded. Warmer afternoons.
• Best for Fly Anglers: September 15 – October 15 — trophy rainbow trout season. Fish 18–26 inches are common. Dry fly opportunities in low clear water. Uncrowded and stunning fall foliage.
