The Best Time to Fish the Kenai River

One of the most common questions our Kenai river fishing guides receive is, "When is the best time to come to Alaska?" The truth is, Alaska Kenai fishing is phenomenal all summer long, but the species you target will change dramatically depending on the month you book your Kenai fishing trips.

To help you plan the perfect Kenai river guided fishing trips, we have broken down the fishing Kenai river calendar month by month. Whether you want to fill your freezer with Sockeye or catch the trout of a lifetime, this guide will help you choose your dates.

June: The Early Run & Hungry Trout

June marks the opening of the Upper Kenai River. After a long winter under ice, the Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden are aggressively feeding on smolt and early insect hatches. This is prime time for swinging streamers and stripping flesh flies. The first run of Sockeye Salmon also pushes up to the Russian River confluence, offering early Kenai salmon fishing action. The crowds are typically lighter in June.

July: The Sockeye Madness

If you want non-stop action and high-quality meat, July is the best time for Kenai river salmon fishing. Over a million Sockeye Salmon flood the river. Our Kenai river guides spend the majority of July targeting these hard-fighting fish from the gravel bars. King Salmon are also present in the lower river during this month. Trout fishing remains excellent as fish begin to drop behind the spawning King salmon.

August & September: Trophy Trout & Silvers

As the massive Sockeye run begins to spawn and die, the river becomes a buffet. August and September are widely considered the holy grail of Alaska Kenai fishing for trophy Rainbow Trout. Using "bead" techniques, we catch some of the fattest trout on earth. Additionally, Silver (Coho) Salmon enter the river, offering aggressive takes on flies and spinners. Fall colors begin to pop, making for breathtaking scenery.
