The Kenai River has the most monitored salmon fishery in Alaska — ADF&G sonar counters at River Mile 19 record daily passage estimates for every species, and that data tells a clear story about when to be here. Whether you're targeting kings, sockeye, coho, or trophy trout, your trip timing changes everything. Here's the full picture.

2026 Species Calendar — Month by Month

• May (15–31): Early season preparation & Peninsula options. While the Kenai mainstem King fishery is closed under ADF&G emergency orders, early season anglers target hatchery Chinook on the nearby Kasilof and early coastal fisheries.
• June (11–30): The Upper Kenai River Trout Opener (June 11) and first-run Russian River sockeye. (Note: Kenai King salmon sport fishing is closed to all targeting, including catch-and-release, under emergency order to rebuild escapement). June offers exceptional sight-fishing for trophy Rainbow Trout with light crowds.
• July (1–15): First-run sockeye winding through Russian River and early second-run sockeye building in the lower river. Monitored closely via ADF&G sonar at River Mile 19 in Soldotna. Prime dates begin booking months ahead.
• July (15–31): Peak second-run sockeye. Daily sonar counts can exceed 30,000 fish. Limits achievable for most anglers. Pink salmon (humpies) arrive in even years. The most productive 2-week window of the entire season.
• August: Second sockeye run tapering off, coho salmon (silvers) beginning to arrive August 1. August 15–31 is peak coho entry. Less crowded than July. Excellent rainbow trout fishing as salmon begin dying upstream.
• September: Prime coho (silver) season — aggressive, acrobatic fish that love spinners and flies. September 1–20 is the most consistent silver fishing. Rainbow trout season building toward fall peak. Fewer anglers = better access.
• October: Trophy rainbow trout season peaks. Rainbows gorge on salmon carcasses and eggs — fish over 24 inches come to net regularly. No king, sockeye, or coho. Cold, quiet, spectacular. The "secret season" most visitors don't know about.
• Dolly Varden: Available spring and fall (May–June, September–October). Dolly Varden follow sockeye and rainbow trout through the system — best on beads and small streamers. No quota pressure.

Which Month is Best for You?

• Best for Early Trout & Light Crowds: June 11–30 — river opener for trophy Rainbow Trout and first-run Russian River sockeye. Pristine water and excellent fly fishing before peak summer crowds.
• Best for Volume Sockeye: July 15–August 5 — second run peak. Sonar counts at their highest. Limit (6 sockeye/day with 12 in possession) achievable for most anglers on guided trips.
• Best for Families: August 15 – September 10 — coho season. Silver salmon are aggressive and fight hard, making them excellent for all skill levels. Less crowded. Warmer afternoons.
• Best for Fly Anglers: September 15 – October 15 — trophy rainbow trout season. Fish 18–26 inches are common. Dry fly opportunities in low clear water. Uncrowded and stunning fall foliage.
