Fall Silvers & Trophy Trout — Best Week of the Year

This was the standout week of the entire fall 2025 season. Silver Salmon (Coho) stacked thick in every major back-eddy and slough from Soldotna down to the lower tide water, while the Upper and Middle Kenai delivered world-class trophy Rainbow Trout action behind spawning sockeye.

Water clarity hit a pristine 5+ feet with water temperatures cooling to a crisp 52°F. Rivers flows dropped to 11,800 CFS, concentrating fish into predictable, highly fishable holding water.

Silver Salmon Breakdown

The late-run Coho salmon entering the Kenai this week were thick-shouldered 10 to 14 lb fish. The most productive technique was twitching 1/2 oz weighted jigs in hot pink, purple, and black/chartreuse in 6–10 foot deep slack-water eddies.

Guide Pro-Tip for Fall Silvers

When twitching jigs for fall Coho, let the jig touch down near bottom, then use a rhythmic 18-inch snap upward followed by a controlled slack fall. 90% of strikes occur on the free fall when the feather tail flares.

Trophy Rainbow Trout & Dolly Varden

The Upper Kenai River from Kenai Lake down to Skilak Lake, as well as the Middle River below Skilak, produced multiple 24" to 28" trophy Rainbow Trout. These fish are gorging on sockeye salmon eggs. Matching bead size and color to current spawn conditions was critical — 8mm mottled peach and 10mm soft orange beads took the largest fish of the week.

Kasilof River Steelhead Update

On the neighboring Kasilof River, fall drift boat trips intercepted the first solid push of wild Steelhead. Anglers swinging bright marabou flies and drifting bead setups reported 2–4 landed fish per drift boat day.

Techniques That Worked This Week

  • Twitching 1/2 oz pink & purple feather jigs in slack back-eddies
  • Single 8mm Mottled Peach bead drift rigged 2" above #4 Gamakatsu hook
  • Casting #5 Blue Fox Vibrax spinners in silver/pink along seam lines
