Silver Salmon Arrive Early — Action Already Hot
Silver Salmon (Coho) entered the lower Kenai River earlier than anticipated this week, providing aggressive, chrome-bright action for anglers targeting the lower river tidal reaches and Soldotna bridge runs.
Water clarity held at 3 feet following light mountain rains, with water temperatures around 56°F. Freshwater Coho are fresh off the saltwater tide and attacking spinners and jigs with extreme aggression.
Silver Salmon Techniques
Casting #5 Blue Fox Vibrax spinners in silver with pink or cerise bodies accounted for 60% of Silver landings. Slow rolling the spinner just above the riverbed along current seams was the key to unlocking consistent bites.
Coho Holding Hotspots
Look for current seams where fast water slows into quiet 6-to-8 foot pools. Silvers rest in these seams before charging upriver through rapids. Cast upstream across the seam and let your spinner swing through.
Rainbow Trout Transition
On the Middle Kenai below Skilak Lake, Rainbow Trout are positioning downstream of active Sockeye spawning gravels. Bead fishing produced solid numbers of 20" to 24" trout.
