Kenai River by Section: Where to Fish and When

The 82-mile Kenai River is divided into three distinct fishing sections under ADF&G regulations, each with unique access rules, species profiles, and gear restrictions.

Upper Kenai River (Kenai Lake to Skilak Lake)

  • Fly fishing only, single barbless hook
  • Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden — catch and release
  • Accessed via Kenai River Trail; no motorized boats
  • Peak: August–October

Middle Kenai River (Skilak Lake to Jim's Landing)

  • Drift boats and non-motorized craft only
  • Sockeye, Coho, and trophy Rainbow trout
  • Primary access: Skilak Lake Road boat launches
  • Peak: July (Sockeye), September (Coho + trout)

Lower Kenai River (Jim's Landing to Cook Inlet)

  • Power boats permitted; most charter activity occurs here
  • All five salmon species + Dolly Varden
  • Primary access: Soldotna and Kenai city boat launches
  • Peak: June–July (Kings + Sockeye), August–September (Coho)
